Will County

US 6 Study

The Will County Division of Transportation (WCDOT) along with their partners, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Village of Channahon, and the City of Joliet, have initiated a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) of US 6 from the I‑55 East Frontage Road to Terminal Court in Joliet and Channahon, Will County.

Overview

The purpose of this Phase I study is to evaluate existing roadway conditions, identify transportation needs, and develop the Preferred Alternative to enhance safety, traffic flow, and mobility along this key regional route.

Project Phases

Proposed highway improvements are typically processed in three distinct phases.

In Phase I (preliminary engineering and environmental studies), proposed geometry, environmental concerns as well as right-of-way requirements are defined.

During Phase II, contract plans are prepared, and the necessary right-of-way is acquired. This Phase Typically takes 2 -3 years to complete.

Phase III represents the actual construction of the improvement and typically requires 2 – 3 years to complete

Contract plan preparation for the improvement is included in IDOT’s proposed Multi-Year Highway & Multimodal Improvement Program.

Land Acquisition and Phase III construction are not included in the current Multi-Year Program.

This project is currently in Phase I.

Proposed Improvements

The general scope of work is anticipated to consist of:

  • Modifications to roadway geometry to enhance operations and safety

  • Improvements to intersections and structures along the corridor

  • Addition of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations to improve multimodal accessibility and safety

Get Involved

This project will follow a Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) approach to solving transportation issues along US 6 by involving stakeholders early and often throughout the study process, especially before major decisions are made. Part of this approach involves a series of Community Advisory Group (CAG) meetings to provide community insight into the development of the Study. The CAG is a collection of community representatives and serves as the focal point for the exchange of information between government entities and the local community.

The group will be made up of community representatives, local government officials, property owners and residents, and stakeholders with technical expertise, reflecting a diverse set of perspectives and interests. The CAG will assist WCDOT, IDOT, and the Project Team in developing and refining the transportation improvement alternative that best serves the needs of the community and surrounding environment.

In addition to the CAG meetings, this study will also conduct three Public Meetings. The meetings will present and initiate the study, discuss safety and traffic information, and solicit public input on the transportation issues and needs along US 6. Subsequent meetings will present the alternatives being considered and the potential impacts and benefits of each.
