Will County

US 6 Study

The Will County Division of Transportation (WCDOT) along with their partners, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Village of Channahon, and the City of Joliet, have initiated a preliminary engineering and environmental study (Phase I) of US 6 from the I‑55 East Frontage Road to Terminal Court in Joliet and Channahon, Will County.

Overview

The purpose of this Phase I study is to evaluate existing roadway conditions, identify transportation needs, and develop the Preferred Alternative to enhance safety, traffic flow, and mobility along this key regional route.

Project Phases

Proposed highway improvements are typically processed in three distinct phases.

Phase I (preliminary engineering phase), proposed geometry, environmental concerns as well as right-of-way requirements are defined.

Phase II (design engineering phase), contract plans are prepared and the necessary right-of-way is acquired.

Phase III (construction phase) represents the actual construction of the improvement.

Phase II of the project is included in IDOT’s Proposed Highway & Multimodal Improvement Program. Phase II, which includes land acquisition and contract plan preparation, typically takes two to three years to complete.

Phase III will be incorporated into the program based on IDOT’s priorities for future funding consideration amongst similar improvement needs throughout the region. Once added to the program, Phase III, which includes construction, typically takes two to three years to complete.

This project is currently in Phase I.

Proposed Improvements

The general scope of work is anticipated to consist of:

  • Modifications to roadway geometry to enhance operations and safety

  • Improvements to intersections and structures along the corridor

  • Addition of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations to improve multimodal accessibility and safety

Get Involved

This project will follow a Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) approach to solving transportation issues along US 6 by involving stakeholders early and often throughout the study process, especially before major decisions are made. Part of this approach involves a series of Community Advisory Group (CAG) meetings to provide community insight into the development of the Study. The CAG is a collection of community representatives and serves as the focal point for the exchange of information between government entities and the local community.

The group will be made up of community representatives, local government officials, property owners and residents, and stakeholders with technical expertise, reflecting a diverse set of perspectives and interests. The CAG will assist WCDOT, IDOT, and the Project Team in developing and refining the transportation improvement alternative that best serves the needs of the community and surrounding environment.

In addition to the CAG meetings, this study will also conduct three Public Meetings. The meetings will present and initiate the study, discuss safety and traffic information, and solicit public input on the transportation issues and needs along US 6. Subsequent meetings will present the alternatives being considered and the potential impacts and benefits of each.
